Self-Guided Sanctuary Walk
Our self-guided sanctuary walk takes you through fields, past our lake, and around scenic observation points. Spot kangaroos, wallabies, emus, horses, alpacas, sheep and deer living as freely as possible across the property, and watch for the cockatoos, galahs and wedge-tailed eagles that pass through.
Walkable at your own pace. Included with general admission, no booking required.
What will you see on the walk?
The walk is a round-trip through fields, across our small lake, and past a small eucalyptus forest, where our sanctuary animals roam.
- A mob of kangaroos and wallabies in the large central field
- A herd of fallow deer and our red deer family in the neighbouring fields
- Sheep, alpacas and horses in their own paddocks
- Emus roaming the property
- A constantly changing cast of native birdlife
Birdwatching from the observation points
Several observation points along the walk give you elevated views across the property. They are excellent for birdwatching, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.
Species you might spot include:
- Sulphur-crested cockatoos and galahs in noisy flocks
- Wedge-tailed eagles riding thermals above the property
- Magpies, lorikeets, kookaburras and other native species through the seasons
Bring binoculars if you have them.
How long does the walk take?
Most visitors take about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how long you spend at the observation points and how much wildlife you stop to watch. The walk is a round-trip on relatively flat terrain.
Is the sanctuary walk accessible?
Most of the walk is on flat, even paths suitable for prams and wheelchairs. A few short sections have grass or gentle inclines. If you have specific access requirements, please contact us ahead of your visit and we will advise on the best route.
Sanctuary walk vs petting area
Two different things, both included with general admission:
- Sanctuary walk: a self-guided scenic walk where you observe animals from paths and observation points
- Petting area: an open-space paddock where you hand-feed and touch kangaroos, wallabies and emus
Most visitors do both. We’d suggest the petting area first, then the walk.
Planning your visit
The sanctuary walk is part of the standard park experience. Park entry, the petting area, the sanctuary walk and access to our animals are all covered by general admission.
Address: 29 The Boulevarde, Gellibrand Lower VIC 3237 (on the Great Ocean Road between Lavers Hill and Princetown).
